Kerala to build major container port

15-11-1999 18:57:15(Probity)

Kerala is planning to turn a port in Thiruvananthapuram into a major container trans-shipment terminal at a cost of Rs20bn ($461mn), a senior port official said today. "We have signed an agreement with leading infrastructure firm Kumar`s Energy Corporation to develop Vizhinjam port at an estimated cost of Rs20bn," S. Vijayan Pillai, director of Kerala`s Port department, told Reuters.

"The project will be implemented on a Build-Operate-Transfer basis and the preliminary work will start immediately," he said. Pillai said the port department hoped to attract container traffic, which is now being handled by Sri Lanka`s Colombo port and Singapore. "The port will be equipped to handle oil, bulk (cargo)...and other traffic," Pillai said. He said the 22-year-old port, which was opened to cargo traffic in 1991 had a major advantage as it was only 10 miles from international shipping routes.
