Union reaches agreements with Delphi, GM
DETROIT (AP) -- The second-largest union representing workers at Delphi Automotive Systems and General Motors Corp. has reached tentative agreements on new contracts with the companies.
The deals with the International Union of Electronic Workers cover about 14,500 workers at Delphi and about 4,200 workers at GM. The major terms mirror the contracts GM and Delphi made with the United Auto Workers earlier this year -- four years in length, with a 3 percent raise each year and a $1,350 signing bonus.
The IUE said Monday the contracts extend job security protections for employees, giving 4,500 Delphi workers full job protections by 2006 and holding the number of GM jobs with protections steady. The GM deal also requires the company to replace every protected worker who retires or leaves a plant.
The current contract expired Monday. The IUE said ratification votes would be completed Nov. 22-23.
The UAW represents about 90 percent of the hourly workers at GM and Delphi. Negotiations with the IUE typically conclude after the UAW has finished its talks.
The IUE represents Delphi workers at plants in New Jersey, Alabama, Mississippi, California and Ohio, and GM workers at a plant in Moraine, Ohio.
The IUE also represents workers at Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp., but considerably fewer than at GM and Delphi. |
