pbull's comments speak to the heart of significant gorilla gaming issues:
In e-commerce, I get the sense that there will be more than one biggie.
There is always the possibility that a tornado will not spawn a gorilla. That probably isn't what he was thinking about when he wrote that. Nonetheless, it's important.
The applications in different industries (chemicals vs. auto parts, for example), create at least some need for specialization, IMO.
Immediately after crossing the chasm, capturing marketshare in the vertical territories is a must (unless we're speaking of an consumer-based product.) The need for specialization is not an indication that the tornado won't spawn a gorilla. Just the opposite, if the wannabe gorilla doesn't capture huge marketshare in one vertical market, then two, then three or more, it will never get to the tornado stage in sufficient strength to come out of it as the crowned gorilla.
At some point, the e-commerce scene will become more clear. These companies must address import/export issues, language barriers, etc., to become an industry standard.
If the front office space is an indicator, all of those issues have already been sucessfully addressed. There's no reason for me to think it can't happen in the case of the other software apps.
