Like your house, my new house is also out of range of cable (1 mile away). I am also out of range of DSL. My phone line is crap and the best connection I can get with a 56k modem is 24600 bps. As I said before I went to a GMH direct pc system. BTW, in my test I mentioned a few days ago I found out I (big dummy), was not using my satellite modem (self installed), I was only using my original 56k modem. The satellite modem is much better than what I had, but I would trade in a second for a RR or ATHM connection. The fact that I can't get cable has nothing to do with my investment in ATHM. IMO, in the long run, none of the DSL companies will compare favorably with ATHM. However, you may or may not make some money on DSL stocks short or long term - WITHK (who in the hell knows).
