This year there have been just about none..which keeps the account going up at general interest rates. He's been saying that currency trading this year has been very peculiar, and I was wondering whether other people trading currencies are here and have had similar experiences.

a lot of folks have. I know very few people who have been making any money this year. Most of the money markets I follow have been very constricted. The ranges have been tight and the action has been very skittish. That kind of market does not lend itself to trend following techniques which is probably why your sons system didn't generate many signals. He should count himself lucky, I know a lot of technical systems that get chopped up pretty badly in this kind of market.
