Neither you nor the writer of that piece understand the technology that gets applied. The biometric scan becomes the digital signature for the digital certificate used in the remote transaction. There are numerous safeguards available to prevent the kind of theft that the reporter was speculating on, so I don't concede that this is a realistic scenario. However, the solution is quite simple: The digital certificate gets pulled and you re-enroll with your fingerprint and get a new digital certificate. In effect, it's not much different than if your credit card is stolen and a different one is reissued to you.

Hope you noticed the IDX "Authentication Certificate" PR today with the Mastercard quote. They are heading toward an eventual linkup with Verisign; VRSN needs to plug their security hole at the user authentication end.

But you shorted this company, right? And you wouldn't have done that without a thorough understanding of their technology -- so this post is for Wexler's edification.
