[More DSL rollouts]

At these prices, what do you figure an ISP could get for 6Mbps DMT?

NEW HAVEN, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 1997--

New Fractional DSL Service Delivers Bandwidth-On-Demand to Businesses.
i-conn, LLC, Connecticut's leading business-only Internet Service
Provider, announced today the commercial availability of DSL (Digital
Subscriber Line) service in Connecticut. i-conn's DSL.net service
offers businesses a high-bandwidth connection to the Internet without
using expensive leased-lines, ISDN, or Frame Relay. Using technology
originally developed by Bell Labs, inexpensive ordinary copper lines
are conditioned to deliver an error-free Ethernet connection to a
business's doorstep. The digital connection has quality equal to
optical fiber.
According to Paul B. Marra, i-conn's Vice-President, "This new
service is not only inexpensive, it is also fast, error-free, easy to
install and manage. Most importantly, it is easy-to-upgrade." Since
the service is sold in "fractions" of a T1 line, businesses can
start with as little as two channels, and increase bandwidth as their
needs increase without any change in equipment or down-time.
Initially, i-conn will offer DSL service in increments of 128,
256, 384, 512, and 768 Kb per second. A 768K connection is 12-times
faster than ISDN, 6-times faster than bonded ISDN, 23-times faster
than a perfect 33.6K connect and over twice the speed of DirectPC
satellite service. At the same time, the DSL service costs less than
a typical ISDN circuit since there are no phone-company switch or
per-minute charges.
Pricing for the new service starts at $599 per month for 128K
service and is available in increments up to 768K ($995 per month.)
These prices include local-loop charges. The service is available
immediately in downtown New Haven, with Stamford and Hartford
scheduled in the coming months.
A DSL connection permits businesses to link their LANs to the
Internet for Web Hosting, E-mail, and Web-browsing. Additionally,
remote offices can be connected via Virtual or Non-Virtual Private
Networking. "Moreover, unlike other high-speed offerings, DSL.net
data travels symmetrically and with low-latency, which is essential
for business uses," said John Jaser, of i-conn's networking
division."
One of the first commercial users, The Polaris Group Inc., a
nationally-known insurance and security brokerage firm, is using
DSL.net to connect their LAN to the Internet. They also plan to use
DSLnet to connect to their remote offices via Virtual Private
Networking and to host their Web Site. According to Ed Wajdowicz,
MIS Director at Polaris, "the service is incredible ... and the
ability to upgrade the speed at a moment's notice lets us buy only
the bandwidth we need today, knowing that when we need more, it will
be there." The Polaris Group has been using their dedicated DSL
connection to i-conn for several months now under a technology-trial
beta program. They have now signed up for a permanent dedicated DSL
connection for their New Haven headquarters.
