Steve Hamon on VERT

Hello Steve,
I am a German Internet stockholder and my English is not good. Please can you say my what's your view better? Commerce One , VerticalNet
or Free Markets or other investments in B2B sector.

Harmon: Commerce One (CMRC) has been one of my favorites for several months now. It recently ran up as the rest of the world realized its
service-based model is superior to a software-based one.

VerticalNet (VERT) has an interesting premise but is more content than commerce. Actually putting together industries for commerce is much
more difficult than many believe, and VerticalNet hasn't done this in any large degree.

Hello Steve,
I've been reading your analysis for several weeks now, and think it's really fantastic. A magazine recently recommended Vertical Net. According
to this article VERT will be generating more revenue than AOL in a few years, and should have a higher market cap. What do you think of this?
Does this seem realistic? What is the future of this company, and is it really a market leader in B-2-B?

Thanks very much for your thoughts.

Harmon: Something must have been lost in the translation because I don't see VerticalNet coming anywhere near AOL (AOL) in market cap or
opportunity. Ariba (ARBA) has a better chance in B-2-B, as does Commerce One (CMRC). But even those won't likely reach AOL's market cap;
it's simply too broad and too big. AOL is probably the only threat that Microsoft (MSFT) now has in the Internet space. At 50-million-plus global
users across AOL, Netscape, ICQ and CompuServe, few in the consumer or business space can touch AOL's leverage.
