RICHMOND, B.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1999--The proposed passage of the revised Satellite Home Viewer Act (SHVA), gives MDU Communications (OTCBB:MDTV) an opportunity to take a look at the U.S. market for deployment of MDTV's services. Currently, approximately 25% of residents in North America live in multi-dwelling units.
By authorizing the delivery of local TV affiliates to DTH satellite subscribers, this legislation will free the DTH service providers to compete on a level playing field with the cable monopolies. In anticipation of a growing demand for DTH services in U.S. urban centers as well as rural areas, MDU Communications has recently returned from a trip to New York, where senior management met with potential investors, analysts and potential strategic partners. The tremendous growth opportunity this market represents and the effects of this type of legislation will assist in opening the door for U.S. multi-unit dwellings to enjoy a similar superior service that MDU Communications now offers to the Canadian multi-dwelling unit market place.
In addition, the delivery of over 50 new channels to MDU's current subscriber base in Canada through StarChoice Communications Inc., positions MDTV as the leader in facilitating the delivery of digital satellite television and other new technologies to the Multi-dwelling unit marketplace.
Building on an already powerful programming line-up, Star Choice Communications Inc., will be adding approximately 50 new channels for it's Canadian subscribers. As a result, MDU's Canadian viewers will have tremendous opportunity for time shifting and have more viewing options in English, French and of US specialty networks. "This new channel line up gives MDTV a tremendous advantage over cable. We now offer residents of multiple dwelling properties a service that cable simply cannot match," explains Gary Monaghan, VP Marketing of MDU Communications. "We can look forward to potentially offering similar services to U.S. multi dwelling unit property owners next year. MDTV is currently in discussion with some of it's Canadian clients that have properties in the U.S., regarding the offering of MDTV's services."
