Okay you guys, stop it :)
You're a really bad influence on me ;) I couldn't resist, and "loaded up" with some more CHTR today at 22 1/4.
And just for fun, one of my little "hobbies" is tracking great companies from their IPO day.
In 1986 (13+ years ago) MSFT's IPO was $19/share (exactly the same as CHTR's IPO price last Tuesday). For EACH SHARE a person bought at the MSFT IPO would now have GROWN TO 144 (8 splits later). And your initial $19 investment (just a single share) would today be worth approx. $12,384 (if my figures are correct).
So let's hypothetically say a person had bought 100 shares of MSFT at the IPO (approx. $2000 investment) and placed them in a ROTH IRA (oh, I know, they didn't have Roth's back then), your +/-$2000 investment would now be worth approx. $12,384,000. TAX FREE, upon retirement!
Can Paul Allen do it TWICE IN A LIFETIME? Was he the "accidental zillionaire"? Is he just beginning to get his "second wind" (runners will know what I mean)? I don't know, but I'm betting that he's very carefully positioning his "Broadband Partners" (and most of his dozens of other investments) to give it a try. Oh, many will say "Charter is no Microsoft." Time will tell. They'll be many stops along the way to add more "cars" to this "Broadband" train, and the previous cars will keep getting fuller (larger) all the time, but the train will just keep on-a-moving faster and farther to who knows where. . .but I'll be along for the ride to see where it takes me.
So. . .
today we (my wife and I) dumped the rest of our MSFT stock (it's been a great run) in one of our retirement accounts, and put it ALL into CHTR. We're going to just "let it ride" as this huge train finishes adding more cars, "loading" them up, and slowly starts moving on down their "Broadband" track.
IMHO, this will be a very exciting and profitable ride for all of us who got on board in the "Charter Longs Car" of this potential monster, while this train was still at it's "first" (of many) stations in the months and years to come.
"Get on board" while you can (at these prices).
