we'll assume there only is a left and a right output from the preamp. plugging a male to double female adaptor in should give him the ability to drive both the amp and the subwoofer with the same preamp level signal (most subs take both preamp and speaker level input; preamp is better). all powered subs will have a sensitivity adjustment to allow him to match the sub volume to the main speakers at any given level. it's important that he find a sub that has similar sensitivity, otherwise as he turns the volume up or down they will not be at the same relative volume. said another way, if the sub is more efficient (most likely), if you adjust the volume to be "matched" at 90 dB and then crank it up to 100 dB, the sub will now be too loud relative to the other speakers.
