biowa,

Or the oracle of hype: HGSI

I must confess to having succumbed to the "join them" school on this one, quite profitably so far. (They touched 100 today).

The issue with them is that just maybe they have some reality behind the hype. Some recent quotes from BioCentury:

>>HGSI has identified and expressed about 14,000 proteins, corresponding to about 80% of the proteins involved in cell signalling mechanisms"

>>discovered 35 new interleukins to add to the 20 already known

>>40 new growth factors to add to the 10 already known

>>12 new TNF's

>>Haseltine predicts that 10 out of the first 250 proteins they have looked at may reach the market as new drugs.

>>Predicts 8-10% of proteins will be useful, either as drugs or targets to neutralize.

Certainly a lot of people I respect (both scientists and non-scientists) turn an upsetting shade of green at the mention of Haseltine and Co., so I know we may just be in smoke-and-mirrors land.
