HP-UX First to Run Oracle8i On Itanium

Binary and Data Compatibility Highlight HP's IA-64 Advantage


LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1999--Hewlett-Packard Company today demonstrated Oracle8i, the leading enterprise database solution, running on the HP-UX(1) 11 mission-critical operating environment on Itanium, Intel's first IA-64 (Intel Architecture, 64-bit) microprocessor. The demonstration took place with support from Oracle® and Intel here at the Oracle OpenWorld '99 conference, which runs through Nov. 18.

Using HP's dynamic translator to run software originally compiled on PA-RISC(2), the demonstration showed binary compatibility between PA-RISC and IA-64. By using a database originally loaded from the PA-RISC version of Oracle8i, the demonstration also proved data compatibility. IA-64 will serve as HP's future platform for e-services.

This data and binary compatibility ensures investment protection and a smooth transition to the IA-64 platform for HP customers. Customers and software developers with applications running on HP-UX today will be able to run their applications unchanged on HP's IA-64 systems. This compatibility ensures that the 50,000-plus applications running on PA-RISC and IA-32 will be able to run out of the box on HP's IA-64 systems. With the help of partners NEC and Hitachi, HP has proved that the current version of HP-UX is IA-64-ready and is poised to be the premier mission-critical operating environment for the IA-64 marketplace.

HP plans to deliver Itanium systems supporting HP-UX, NT-64 and Linux in the second half of 2000. HP-UX 11, which was released in 1997, is IA-64-ready and is shipping today on HP's PA-RISC-based HP 9000 V-Class, N-Class and L-Class Enterprise Servers.

As Intel's exclusive partner in the development of Explicitly Parallel Instruction-set Computing (EPIC), the foundation for IA-64, HP has a better understanding than any other vendor of how to optimize software and system architectures to take advantage of the scalability, availability and computing power that IA-64 offers. This system-level optimization will give HP's customers superior performance on IA-64-based systems, beginning with Itanium and continuing into the future.
