SBC sees about 1 million DSL customers by end 2000

NEW YORK, Nov 16 (Reuters) - SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE:SBC - news), the largest U.S. local telephone company, said on Tuesday it expects to have more than one million high-speed Internet customers by the end of 2000.

''We will have one million customers by the end of next year,'' SBC Chairman Edward Whitacre said at the Warburg Dillon Read Global Telecom conference in New York.

SBC, which has been investing heavily in high-speed data services, said earlier this month it passed the 100,000 DSL (digital subscriber line) customer milestone.

SBC's DSL service is currently available to about 10 million households and businesses. The company recently launched $6 billion program to make DSL service available to 77 million customers -- or 80 percent of its customers -- over the next three years.

DSL technology uses ordinary phone lines to provide always-on, high-speed Internet access.
