f.simons: There is a small opportunity for Athlon but their ability to take advantage of it beyond their present market share and break even is highly suspect especially when they say they are going to "break even". That is they can't do it on price as their historic yields will not allow for any great leap in production to allow them to reduce street prices.

The great facet of INTC that is often overlooked is their ability to manufacture better than anyone else in the world. Manufacturing is both a science and an art. It requires that you reproduce one item exactly like the one before according to spec and at sufficient profit margins to allow flexibilty in marketing and in sufficient quantities to realize economies of scale. INTC does this better than anyone in the world at a very high value added per unit fabricated regardless of the product being made. This company is far more than a "chip" maker. AMD at best is a chip maker and doesn't have the capitalization to provide the necessary facets of R&D, manufacturing,Marketing and Engineering that INTC has. INTC is a very unique company. AMD is not JFD
