Asia-Pac Net User Base to Grow 422% by 2005

[November 8, 1999] Research being conducted by The Phillips Group predicts that the Internet user base in the Asia-Pacific region will increase from an anticipated 43.6 million at the beginning of 2000 to at least 228 million by the close of 2005.

Phillips Group says that, if recently announced fibre projects are implemented, regional growth may be even greater. The company says that early indications show that the potential Asia-Pacific Internet market for 2006 could comprise in excess of 370 million users, an increase of 750% from the figures predicted for the end of 1999.

Within the region, China will over take Japan's present number one spot by late 2004, according to the research group. This will be consolidated by the close of 2005 when it will exceed 85 million, representing 37.64% of the entire Asia-Pacific user base with a domestic penetration of 6.58%.

On the other hand, Japan's user base share represents greater than 60% penetration.

The Phillips Group draws this information from initial findings of a new study Net Pressure which assesses the impact of the Internet on carrier traffic patterns and infrastructure.

The research group says that its methodology is based on figures taken from the most recent pertinent information and extrapolated utilizing a proprietary Internet growth curve linked to `time-in-market' against United Nations population data sanity checked against Population Research Bureau data.
