All we know about people IS what they tell us- if someone never posts we will not know they exist. It doesn't mean we have to believe the literal truth of what someone says to "know" them. Some lies are as revealing as the truth- but NOT all. And you only know one aspect of the person on the net. I like the aspect, but it is too simple to say who we are here is who we are. I don't agree with that. I am not who I am here. And I know that is true of several other people. Sometimes who we are in cyber space is who we wish to be, and sometimes, it seems, people are cursed with being their worst hidden selves. I am sure a few people are the same as they are in 3d- and I am sure these persona reflect our inner selves better than our 3d selves do- but that is not who we are. We are not merely our thoughts we are also our behaviors. So while my thoughts lead me one way, my behavior often leads me another way. And if you know me only by my thoughts and what I tell you of my actions- then I have given you a carefully selected version of who I am. If you could observe me you would be able to make a better, or at least a different, judgment.

I also don't think you can overlook the fact that some people are tremendously good liars. I don't think there is much of a way to detect those people on the net- and since those people tend to be very clever one must assume they are on the net.
