Mike, RE: This is where Dell gets its competitive production cost advantage, through process engineering improvements. Completely integrating the net into Dell's processes is frequently mentioned by MD. So does this mean that Dell's earnings are understated? No, this wouldn't be an income statement issue. It would, however, mean that the assets on the balance sheet would be understated. It could be argued that DELL has intangible assets such as you mention that not reflected on the balance sheet. This would primarily make DELL's book value a little more meaningful.
