Reader, from the same piece: "In order to really catch the desktop [market], you really have to catch it all," says Linus Torvalds, the inventor of the Linux operating system. Mr. Torvalds, who specifically mentioned Corel's effort in his Monday evening keynote address, says that a technically sophisticated operating system by itself is not enough to win users in the personal computing space. "The desktop is one of the most strategically important areas for Linux," he says. "That's the thing that most people associate with computers." Mr. Torvalds, however, admitted that Linux has yet to have any real success in making its way to consumers' desktops.
