[Avici Shows Fiber-Optic Switch, Trying To Show Tech Lead]

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Avici Systems Inc., a North Billerica, Mass., maker of a high-capacity switch/router, is demonstrating its gear to the public as part of an effort to show that its product is ahead of its competitors in deploying such technology.

Avici is one of a handful of companies developing high-capacity gear to handle vast streams of Internet traffic flowing into telecommunications operations over fiber-optic lines.

The company said it is demonstrating its system in a live fiber-optic network as part of the SuperComputing '99 conference.

"Our belief is that this is going to drive optical and next-generation networks," said Surya Panditi, president and chief executive officer of Avici Systems.

Avici is actively working with six customers, including GST Telecommunications Inc. (GSTX). Avici has said its system is one of the few working terabit switch/routers in the market today. It is competing with technology Lucent Technologies (LU) acquired when it bought Nexabit Networks Inc. and systems that Nortel Networks Corp. (NT) has said it plans to develop in house.
