The most interesting, and frustrating, fact in the article is the disclosure that researchers can't have all the submarine data because of the desire to keep the Russians from knowing the sonar signatures of submarines. Is the raw data about the ice cap somehow mixed in with sonar data? I guess so, pings and echoes are probably unique.

It strikes me as incredible that the earth's population could have doubled during our lifetimes, and that the use of automobiles, air conditioners and power plants have also greatly multiplied during our lifetimes, without some effect on climate.
