Novell an internet player

Well Schmidt did it. He used his contacts and the ichain team apparently succeeded in moving the technology to the product stage. We now have Novell out there on the internet with a functioning business to business directory for authentication and management of end users. The commitment of SunW to get the directory into ISP's, the pricing which allows a painless movement from plain LDAP into NDS is just going to give this company the boost that we have always wanted, have long waited for, and as stockholders --- DESERVE.

Schmidt did it. He suckered those shorts into losing their shirts. Credit must be given to the Bank of America analyst who set everybody up and made the worst call of 1999. But now it is clear that Novell has a working internet directory product which can be sold to its enterprise customers so that they can open up their internal systems on a secure basis to the public. This same system can be used by major portals like Alta Vista to manage customer identities.

Once enough momentum builds, NDS becomes the de facto internet directory standard. You have SunW, CPQ, AOL and others behind them. There is nothing in sight from MSFT. All of the other meta-directory approaches and builds upon LDAP will fade given the power of Novell's directory.

This is an engineering win and a marketing win.

If I were Gates I would concede this market to Novell and work to build NDS up as the internet standard. Why not get ahead of the Justice Department curve?
