NEW YORK, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The China Fund, Inc. (NYSE: CHN - news) today announced its financial results for the third quarter ended July 31, 1999. The Fund is a closed-end management investment company seeking long-term capital appreciation primarily through investment in the equity securities of companies engaged in a substantial amount of business in the People's Republic of China.

For the nine months ended July 31, 1999, the Fund reported a net investment gain of approximately $1,346,314 or $0.14 per share versus a net investment gain of approximately $474,987 or $0.04 per share for the nine months ended July 31, 1998. Net realized and unrealized gains, for the nine months ended July 31, 1999, were $29,552,210 or $3.11 per share compared to net realized and unrealized loss of $84,507,520 or $7.79 per share for the nine months ended July 31,1998.
