IMO the right thing for MSFT to do is to put an offer on the
table & start negotiating. Giving up Windows may work. There's
no implicit monopoly in that case. There's no money to be
made peddling the O/S, so they're free & clear (IMHO). That,
in & of itself will send the stock up.

Market perception, as you note, is absolutely critical &
investors are historically allergic to uncertainty.
