The SSD is a non-organic EL display that uses a "different type of phosphor," though they don't say exactly what it is. Here are the labels and caption from the slide for layers 5 & 6 in the slide show:

5. Yellow (R/G) Phosphor: ZnS
6. Cyan (B/G) Phosphor: SrS

5. Yellow (R/G) Phosphor & 6. Cyan (B/G) Phosphor
The next step is the formation of the "phosphor" layer. Our proprietary phosphors are capable of producing record breaking efficiency and brightness; over 10 lm/W and up to 15,000 cd/m^2 of yellow light. The combination of our yellow and cyan phosphors create white light. We then filter this white to create 16.7 million colors.

I see "WED" is publicly traded in Canada and is a component of the TSE 300. I haven't had great success with Canadian technology stocks, and this one is a money-burner to boot. I got a chuckle out of this quote from the Electronic Buyer's News article:

"Our approach has been to show technological progress rather than hype. In nine years, we have never missed a technology milestone."
-- Westaim ADT president Michael Goldstein

I do believe that some company will eventually succeed with a low-cost electroluminescent approach. In a few years, this could be a problem for the large-format plasma guys.
