I went to St. John's, which actually grew out of the movement to democratize high culture. I will only say that in my rather extensive experiences in and around St. John's, I came to be very dubious of the value of High Culture for the Masses.....and, by the way, one should not exaggerate the participation of "the masses" in high culture. The few truly popular phenomena along those lines are like the Three Tenors concerts: terribly hokey, and worth little.....
Do you think that folk culture was actually created by the Volk? There are always authors, and there is always a market. Dylan is perfectly legitimate....
As for the Pokemon trading cards, they are harmless. Sorry that someone made a buck on satisfying the desires of children...
I am sorry that some things are marginalized, but people do not live to preserve cultures for our amusement. I am not prepare to deplore the growing custom of wearing trouser, or to keep people in native costume.....
America is the most modern country, where the effects of modernization have been most deeply felt, and therefore it is the actually existing culture of modernity....
