The psychology of a split:

QCOM is going to split 4 for 1 in a few weeks. The experts have been saying that nothing is changed by that action: just like pizza: if you take a piece of an 8 cut, it is the same as taking 2 pieces of a 16 cut. Stop right there.

Psychologically it might create more demand for the stock:

- lower price makes it more affordable for people to buy a round lot:

You cannot buy Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) for your 1999 Roth IRA contributions.

You can buy more shares when the prices is less expensive: for example: Roth IRA $ 2,000
A stock is trading $ 300/sh: you can buy 6 shares with $ 200 leftover
If the stock is split 3 for 1, the price is $ 100/sh, you can buy 20 shares (fully invested)

- A dollar increase in the price of stock represent a higher percentage rise. The expectation is that companies split the stock if the future is bright and expect the stock to appreciate further.

Those are among the benefits of stock splits. It is more than slicing the pizza to 8 or 16 cuts.

Today QCOM is on SALE. People usually crowd the store when there is a big sale going, but ironaically, they stay away when the stock is on SALE. Shorted bunch of Jan01/300 puts at 53 after asking the question: would I be willing to buy QCOM for $ 300 between now and Jan01 if somebody pays you $ 53/share right now? I said YES!!
