The technology-laden Nasdaq fell amid a broad decline on Wall Street. Traders said the market was cashing in after a rally that brought composite index to its 11th record high in 13 sessions.
The Nasdaq composite index <.IXIC> fell 26.15 points, or 0.79 percent, to 3269.37. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 49.24 points to 10,883.09.
Total volume on the Nasdaq reached 1.65 billion shares, beating Tuesday's record of 1.49 billion. Declining issues outpaced advancers by 2,134 to 1,927, while 238 issues hit fresh highs compared with 77 at new lows.
The market's systems crashed Tuesday and were down for about the last 20 minutes of the trading day, after a software upgrade designed to ease the burden of surging volume.
Oracle Inc. <ORCL.O> was one of Nasdaq's most active stocks, climbing 6-1/2 to 71, after touching a 52-week high of 72-3/8. A slate of Wall Street analysts upgraded their ratings on the software company after a conference call they said was positive.
But overall, technology bellwethers lost ground. Dow component Microsoft Corp. <MSFT.O> extended losses, closing down 2-5/16 at 85. Wireless technology company Qualcomm Inc. <QCOM.O> lost 20-3/8 to 342-7/8 as investors pulled the breaks on a rally that brought the stock up more than 100 points in November.
Computer chip stocks were broadly lower, led by chip giant and Dow component Intel Corp. <INTC.O>, down 1-13/16 to 74-3/4. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange's semiconductor index <.SOXX> fell 12.48 points, or 1.94 percent, to 631.14.
On the upside, the S&P semiconductor equipment index <.SPTKSM>, a measure of semiconductor parts makers, gained 12.87 points, or 2.70 percent, to 489.34 ahead of an earnings announcement from Applied Materials Inc. <AMAT.O>.
Applied Materials stock gained 4-1/2 to 110 after touching a new high of 113-1/4. After the market closed, the company posted earnings that exceeded Wall Street forecasts.
Internets and shares of foreign-based companies also showed strength.
In their market debut, American Depositary Receipts of Spanish Internet firm Terra Networks SA <TRRA.O> gained 25-1/4 points to close at 38-1/4. Its initial public offering was priced at $13.41 per ADR. Korea Thrunet Co Ltd <KOREA.O> jumped 17-1/16 to 35-1/16 after an $18-a-share IPO.
Chinese issues extended gains after an announcement Monday that China and the United States struck a deal on the Asian powerhouse's membership in the World Trade Organization. Hong Kong-based Dransfield China Paper Corp. <DCPCF.O> rose 10-11/16 to 11-1/8.
China Resources Development Inc. <CHRB.O> jumped 19 to 25. The company said after the bell that it was unaware of what may be pushing the stock price higher.
