Jim, unless you have run across one of those auto type generators that is, vastly, improved in the last month or two, you would be wasting your money. Check out the amps that they put out. All you could do is run a couple of light bulbs with one. Then you have the problem of keeping your car battery charged, which means running the engine for long periods of time, and, if you don't stock up on a bunch of gas, you're stuck. We have a bunch of kerosene lamps, and those that run on 6 volt batteries that last for an extended period of time. And we have some butane lanterns where the gas bottle also serves as the base of the lamp.

The normal car engine has enough, basic, power to light a home but, that power is channeled to be used in the propelling of the vehicle.

It may be a little late now, but the kind of money that would serve people best, if this thing gets extended, are pre 1964 coins because of the silver content. Paper money could become useless but, that would be a "worst case" scenario.
