NDS eDirectory Provides Management and Security Infrastructure to Support High-volume Internet Services
LAS VEGAS (Fall COMDEX ?99) - Nov 16, 1999 - Novell, Inc. today announced that AltaVista Company has selected its NDS© eDirectory? software to provide Internet management and security for its new instant messaging solution. This NDS eDirectory deployment represents another milestone in Novell?s strategy to extend its leadership in directory-based networking software to Internet and -business markets.
As part of AltaVista?s software infrastructure, NDS eDirectory provides a dynamic security service that automatically authenticates users to AltaVista. The highly scalable Novell software has the capacity to support access to AltaVista?s messaging service and other high-volume Internet services by millions, or even billions, of users.
In addition, NDS eDirectory provides AltaVista with a software foundation for secure, manageable Internet services that can be personalized in ways that meet user preferences. For example, e-businesses such as portals and service providers can use NDS eDirectory and related Novell technology to provide users access to multiple services through a single registration and sign-on.
?We were looking for a scalable directory solution to provide authentication services for AltaVista?s messaging service. NDS eDirectory met our needs with flying colors,? said Rod Schrock, president and CEO of AltaVista.
?We?re delighted that Internet leaders like AltaVista understand the importance of directory services and are choosing the leading Internet directory, NDS eDirectory,? said Dr. Eric Schmidt, Novell chairman and CEO. ?This announcement reinforces NDS eDirectory as a critical thread in the fabric of the overall Internet infrastructure. Clearly, the ultimate winner is the end user, whose Internet messaging experience is made secure, reliable and personal through NDS eDirectory.?
Instant messaging allows users to exchange online messages in real-time, with messages appearing on a user?s screen without being routed to an e-mail inbox. Based on NDS eDirectory, AltaVista?s service takes advantage of Novell?s more than seven years of experience in integrating directory software with enterprise and Internet applications.
Novell?s Consulting Services worked with AltaVista to design, plan and implement the integration of NDS eDirectory with AltaVista. This consulting arm of Novell specializes in the rapid deployment of directory solutions that reduce network management costs and speed the integration of diverse systems in large customer networks, including e-businesses such as portals, service providers and online retailers.
?Engaging Novell Consulting provided us the exact directory expertise we needed to address our business challenges and meet our aggressive schedule,? said Breen Liblong, chief architect of AltaVista. ?We described what we envisioned and they immediately started delivering, making this huge roll-out a success ? putting an infrastructure in place for new advanced services.? ----------- |
