What does the Munder NetNet co-portfolio manager think about Novell?

I just returned from my local CFP Chapter meeting. Brian Salerno, co-portfolio manager of the Munder NetNet fund, spoke about Internet investing in general and had a question-answer session afterwards:

Let's cut to the chase, I asked him: "What do you think about Novell?"

They do not own it. He was kind of excited about the possiblities of the directory market but he has not seen perform well in going after this market [Paul, he means execution;)]. He said that Novell may have a technological edge in this product [may???????] but he is not sure if that is the case, especially with the progress made by the competition [yeah, right Active Directory...domains....].

Then I asked him: "Is Novell still perceived in your field as a company with great technology lacking in marketing skills?"

Well, yeah...he said. The guy they brought in from Sun is a technologist. These guys are the first ones who get shot if things don't work out.

The above were his comments but they are not exact quotes...

To me, he was saying that Novell is not perceived to be an Internet company, at least not yet. Eric has done a wonderful job so far but he MUST surround himself with some top notch brand marketing specialists who will change the perception of the company (build it and they will come) soon. Actually if I don't see this happening by the end of the year I may be finally selling after holding for 3 years.

Some other things he mentioned:

He believes Microsoft's Windows 2000 will be their most successful product ever
He is very bullish on the Internet Advertising sector and especially DoubleClick.
He is also bullish on Network Solutions and TMP Worldwide (owns Monster.com).
Called current valuations of Internet stocks very "fluffy".

Anyway, a good session to get a feel of how some of these guys think. He said that they have a backlog of about 100 companies that he will be meeting with in the next three months...

Hope this was helpful.
