With the bid and ask system, generally speaking when a trade occurs on the bid it is a retail seller of stock and the mm is the buyer. When a trade occurs at the ask side of the market it is a retail buyer and the seller is a mm. The mm adjusts his price according to orders received and position. On BB a stock can trade through your buy order all day long if the ask doesn't match your price thus no fill. You are absolutely correct however, to put in limit orders only!!
