Saw your post to Bill. Just as an aside, I thought the Clinton administration's appointment of Hormel to be Ambassador of Belgium was just plain wrong. No judgment here. To appoint an openly acknowledged homosexual to be Ambassador to a country where the population is over 95% traditional Catholics just seems like a slap in the face and damn arrogant. I can see this as a case where a candidate's avowed sexual proclivity should distinguish him from another. This is aside from a debate over whether the Belgians are right, wrong or sideways on the issue of sexual orientation. It just does not make sense from the standpoint of diplomacy to send a person whose sexual orientation most of the country would find offensive as a practical matter. How is this likely to improve relations or communications between the countries? JLA
