I think if you have two such friends, you are very, very lucky. That kind of friendship is rare and precious. Many friendships are compartmentalized and serve some of your needs, but few ever reach that almost unconditional acceptance and love.

Of course, it gets harder as we get older, because we DO get hurt, as you did, by some we consider true friends. ANd we protect ourselves. I have one right now, and it took a long time to get to this point, but I believe we really know almost everything- lovable and un- about each other. The true test was when we recently disagreed about something and actually TALKED about it! (That may sound funny to all you outspoken people- but for two well-trained Southern girls, it's a major breakthrough!)
