Anthony,

I've had some exposure to embedded systems for automobiles so I may
be able to answer you questions.

>1)Embedded system does not need a GUI: Can Windows CE be used in an embedded system enviromment without GUI system (In other word can Windows CE compete with real time embedded system by not including
the GUI system)

I serious doubt this. However, I believe Pharlap (and maybe others)
have embedded systems which utilize Windows DLLs and are targetted
at developers who want to do realtime development using Windows
facilities. I doubt that the performance and deterministic qualities
of a true RTOS will be there and would be very surprised to see it
in a car.

>2)Are others automobile companies such as Ford,Chrysler, Toyota developed embedded system for their engine and transmission

Any car with fuel injectors has some type of embedded system
controlling them. Do you know of any cars sold in the US or
Europe with a carburetor? The government has given the car
companies two big reasons to go this route: CAFE, and emissions
standards.

>3) What are the benefit of having embedded sytem in a transmission and engine system.

Better mileage. Better performance. You might also get away with
using cheaper, and fewer, hardware components.

>4) Any potential license of GM embedded system for other car
manufacturer in the future (in other way do you see WIND will be a
dominant in the automobile area)

I think GM uses embedded systems produced by a subsidiary (Delco and
Delphi??). They could market these to other car companies. Siemens
is also getting very aggressive.
