Setting aside the question of YHOO, AOL, AMZN, CMGI and EBAY a broad generalization doesn't work. There are many factors at work including the real economy (and sectors of), money flow, alternative investment's (be it bonds, T-bills etc..) as well as near and longer term outlooks that effect market psychology and so forth. Against this backdrop is the universe of stocks, some of which are "overvalued" and others that might be considered "undervalued".
Apart from a shorting strategy, the objective is to pick stocks that will be valued to have a greater ability to generate earnings in the future than is recognized today.
