Michael,

Why??? Well it's good software and SUNW is behind it
for starters. It's free w/Linux 6.0. Companies that
use it will probably be interested in having it
supported, something SUNW can and will do. EZ upgrades
via the web, also free. I'm assuming (but don't know)
that there won't be file-format incompatibilities w/
those in Office.

Sun has released Solaris to the public, mainly under
the "fair-use" doctrine in the copyright law. They
normally sell the O/S with the hardware so I don't
really know what an unbundled price for it would be.

The price of Sun's systems are based on their perceived
usefulness to the customer. Market dictates price.
