Think of your refrigerator as a cache. You put a quart of milk there so you don't have to go to the market every time you have cereal. A cache sits on the network closer to you than the server. It caches (stores) the latest requested data that comes down the line in case someone else needs it, thereby saving bandwidth between the cache and the server.
