TELUS severs connection with Sympatico to focus on regional Internet Services
BURNABY, BC, Nov. 18 /CNW/ - TELUS announced today that it has sold its 16.6 per cent share of Medialinx, the national Internet company originally formed to develop content under the Sympatico name for Stentor companies. Bell Canada has purchased the TELUS interest. ''Our customers have told us they want information that is more relevant to them and their community,'' says Mark Schnarr, TELUS's vice-president of Internet Services. ''For example, while the Maple Leafs may well have fans in B.C., people living in this province want more focus on B.C. teams, right down to hometown junior hockey scores. This preference applies to local and regional news and information as well.'' TELUS has developed its own portal site, MyBC.com, to offer more relevant, regional content and advanced Web-based productivity tools such as online, personal calendars. Among the features of MyBC.com are local news, weather, sports, and even maps and directions to British Columbia locations. Visitors can customize the Web site so each time they log on to MyBC.com they are presented with the updated information they want. They can also be notified by e-mail of upcoming sales, concerts and other community news. TELUS plans to develop and launch regional portal sites across Canada over the next year. In September, MyBC.com was voted Best Local Web Site by readers of Vancouver's Georgia Straight newspaper. The portal was launched in May and received more than 10 million page views in October. The customer service numbers for TELUS Internet customers remain the same. E-mail addresses for TELUS customers in B.C. are changing from @bc.sympatico.ca to the simpler @telus.net. However, customers can keep their existing e-mail addresses until October 31, 2001, if they choose. TELUS is Canada's second largest telecommunications company and provides a full range of advanced communications services and products connecting Canadians with the world. The company's shares are traded on the Toronto and Montreal stock exchanges under the stock symbols BTS (Common) and BTS.a (Non-Voting).
