DSL just kept moving at the same clip as during the day due to its dedicated channel to the CO

Actually, it didn't. Take a look again if you can find it. DSL slowed down during the day when it was more heavily used. I believe I remember that DSL slowed *more* in the day than cable did at night.

The reason for this is that DSL lines share bandwidth once they reach the CO. Think of DSL as a star network with the CO as a hub. Cable is a tree network. Same issues but in different places.

It costs too much to provide for the worst case of all DSL lines going full speed at the same time.
