First, I have read "Notes Towards a Definition of Culture" numerous times. However, Eliot was very big on the fruitful interplay of classes and regions in the development of culture; he loved music halls; in one of his essays, he extols Shakespeare for being able to appeal to all manner of persons; and he was so much a fan of the Marx Brothers that he corresponded with Groucho in the last years of his life. Anyway, I do not think that Cobain was frivolous and degrading. His lyrics are no more nihilistic than "The Wasteland", representing a state of longing for something not quite seen or understood, and his music is peculiarly expressive of this condition.....Hendrix is great, but mainly as a superlative guitarist, and I cannot put on everyone....
