Some insurance,in case QCOM doesn't get the whole 3G pie its share price seems to include.

Voltaire, Not long ago you posted in reference to a comparison of InterDigital Communications Corp (AMEX:IDC) with the stock we both like a great deal, Qualcomm:

"That loosely held no-entity (InterDigital) has been hanging around 4 to 5 dollars for the last 5 years. Now there is potential!"

Well guess what. Today, after very significant news (on all the major wires, including Dow Jones), InterDigital closed UP over TEN PERCENT at its high of the day, $6, on extraordinary volume.

InterDigital is claiming a piece of ALL FIVE new 3G standards. I'm not sure even Qualcomm is making that strong a claim.

The news can be found in a number of locations. Here's an easy one:
biz.yahoo.com

In short, the article quotes the IDC President: ``We believe that we have technology, patents and patents pending that will be essential to the implementation of all modes of the (ITU's 5 part 3G) standard. We are extremely well positioned as a developer of creative and valuable technology content for 3G wireless products.'

The article goes on:
InterDigital's work in developing TDMA and CDMA technologies is based upon a heritage of invention and content contribution stretching over more than 20 years. It results in a strong core competency directed at the 3G specifications expected to dominate the market.

Mr. Goldberg added, ``As we execute our 3G strategic plan, we will offer this expertise and technology content - through engineering development services, system on a chip capabilities and software component sales - to equipment producers worldwide.'

At the beginning of this year, InterDigital began a multi-year development program for Nokia to develop high bandwidth CDMA technology for 3G products. InterDigital owns and has the right to license the developed technology and inventions.

As part of its business strategy, InterDigital plans to market either directly or through content based partnerships, ASICs with 3G FDD capabilities. InterDigital also plans to market other products including ASICs with added TDD capabilities.

In 1999, InterDigital completed the development of its second-generation B-CDMA(TM) ASIC, a system on a chip that contains the core elements of the wideband CDMA technology that InterDigital will utilize in its 3G FDD (wideband CDMA) technology development program. The ASIC has been fabricated and has performed successfully in extensive testing."

See the news link above for more of the great news today about that other company, IDC, that also has intellectual property rights in 3G -- and could possibly have even more IPRs in the new standards than Qualcomm's well-deserved IPRs.

I wouldn't encourage anyone to sell their Qualcomm stock. We've all made lots of money on it. For a little insurance, though, in case Qualcomm doesn't have as big a piece of the third generation standards pie as the current ultra-high share price predicts, I'm adding IDC - - - just in case!

I've mentioned to you that there's a full report on IDC on the Net.
If anyone is interested, they can find a link to that report on InterDigital in post 46934 earlier on this thread.
