Neocon, I have nothing to retract. I never said anything about Bob Dylan except that he writes his own lyrics. True or not? (I did not add, as I could have, that I can't stand people who sing through their noses.)
Jeez, Neocon, you are so condescending to these "primitives" and their "folkways"!!!!! In the first place, why do you presume they are "primitives"? Many of the people I am thinking of are every bit as "sophisticated" and "cultured" as you are! And why do you persist in confusing "folkways" and "cultural artifacts" and "cultural activity"? And the only point I wanted to make in connection with the costumes was simply that they are more BEAUTIFUL, aesthetically, than ready-to-wear, which, is not, btw, necessarily more functional, although it sure is cheaper & quicker (as I pointed out).
I am not the tourist type, always eager to snap a picture of the "natives" doing the hula for the palefaces...But I am a fan of good folk music, for example. Some national groups have wonderful folk music; others have...ehhh...not so good. Personally, I place American folk music, as a whole, somewhere in the middle. (Although I would put Blues way up there, along with Portuguese Fados.) In any event, I do not regard Fados, or Russian gypsy, or Greek Rembetico, or Tuvan throat-singing as doomed relics of the past, bound to be drowned out by the commercial crap presently blaring out of boom-boxes all around the world. however "modern" that crap may be...
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! <not so VBG>
