Jill,

Terrific question!

How much influence is the market, and market cap, having on the future of these companies and their ability to leverage and build?

The manual sez John Chambers was the first one to use rapid acquisitions as a key growth strategy and means of integrating new technologies into the product line. Certainly the company's accelerating market cap over the years helped him implement that strategy because he almost always used company stock for the acquisitions. In that context, the market and the market caps will have a lot to do with companies' abilities to do the same.
