Jules, Article... Intel moving on Fast Ethernet...

Apr 15, 1997 Intel To Offer Fast Ethernet Migration

By David Joachim, CommunicationsWeek

Intel will introduce a stackable hub next week designed to help IT shops migrate to Fast Ethernet.

Available in either 12- or 24-port configurations, the Express 10/100 Stackable Hub can run at either 10 megabits per second or 100 Mbps per port. That lets IS and network managers deploy high-bandwidth services to some desktops via Fast Ethernet while still supporting 10 Mbps services to others.

Product line manager Sean Riley compared Intel's hub approach to that of its PC processors. "You buy a chip from us for its backward compatibility," he said. "So you get the added performance but you can still run all of the stuff you already have."

The Express 10/100 also boasts competitive pricing--$1,525 for the 12 ports and $2,375 for 24 ports. "Our customers felt the magic number is $100 per port," Riley said.
