Duh, the productivity in tech is basically achieved by farming out the labor-intensive subassemblies overseas.

What about services?

automated directory assistance (no telephone operators)
automated banking (no tellers...ATM's instead)
automated transaction entry via Internet (no data entry clerks or 800 number phone operators)
automated voice recognition and transcription (no secretaries)
etc, etc, etc.

And why shouldn't we farm out the low value-added labor intensive parts of manufacturing? This is probably more due to the unavailability in this country of an educated entry-level workforce than anything else. This shortage is forcing companies to automate and/or transfer entry-level jobs overseas. When we start valuing real education in our school systems rather than sports, sex education, and our "feel good about ourselves" curriculum, then maybe companies won't be forced to transfer jobs overseas for lack of an educated workforce. Meanwhile, more power to those countries who choose to educate their citizens.
