Had a conversation with my very pragmatic brother the other day. He had attended a 401k presentation where someone made the observation that Y2K could not be much of a threat because the market had already discounted it. Discount, discount....where's the discount?

Said pragmatic brother is a first rate data base administrator for Oracle/DB2. (Note to headhunters: he's perfectly happy). Just watching his face led me to the following insight.

Smart computer people are mostly pretty sanguine about Y2K. Why? Because 1) they have seen bugs before, 2) they tend to be quiet and introspective and independent and 3)!!!!! They Are Confident That They Will Be Able to Fix any technology in their own lives. Rightly or wrongly, they just don't think much about supply chains. Heck, they can load a new operating system on their PC if they have to do it.

So here is my new insight. Wall Streeters are talking to and watching the faces of the smartest technical people that they know. They watch Larry Ellison. Larry Ellison doesn't seem to be worried. They watch the guy who fixes their networks. They watch Cheeky. Heck, these guys don't seem to be worried.

Maybe we're all forgetting that Y2K is bigger than the technology we physically interact with each day. And we are definitely forgetting that most of the people in the world are not Oracle/DB2 data base administrators.
