My guess is that people who suffer from intractible pain frequently are indigent. I mean, they can't work, they take drugs, unless they have a good family support system, they may even be homeless. They may have become involved in criminal acts, like forging prescriptions, because they can't find a doctor who takes their pain seriously. It's a real shame.
