BTW, Croc, I think I remembered ~ hep me out here if you can ~ that the king near Mycenae's Lion Gate whose treasure was discovered (you mentioned the Golden Cup) ~ and there was the Golden Mask ~ I don't think now jeepers that was King Mynos.
And the Treasury building of....Atrius? (Nearby.) I forget. It has one of the nicest stone masonry domes in a the world.
I think it was someone else, and maybe Agamemnon?
And that the Mynos was King Minos of The Minoans. (Minotaur et al)
(Who preceded the Myceneans and were centered off the mainland of Greece on Crete, of course.) (4-5000 years BP?)
This is double or triple word score embarrassing, of course, as I studied everything about the Minoans I could find ~ one of Earth's GREATEST Civilizations, imho, without a doubt; and I even knew the names and layouts of all their Crete settlements and their chronologies ~ and still I made a big Paulo-booboo. I haven't looked it up, but I bet you know; and I bet you didn't say anything, which, would have been just fine, honest, and even appreciated, you sweetie. Like I say, I claim, :o), I used to know most of this stuff, but not really, anymore. So I just toss cookies.
Actually, and I expect this may be incredible, I try not to talk about things I don't know about; and I think my last rating with JFred and Associates was right near 50%. A record to stand by.
It is interesting that Mycenean Palaces, Palace Cities, were so similar and yet so DIFFERENT from Minoan, and this clear change highlights even more the uniqueness of the Minoan time.
They (Mycenean cities) were fortresses, with extremely similar (superficially) graphic/architectural designs (tho more rigid, "regal," tartan and martial) ~ and the Minoan Palaces, were not. Fortresses. They had no defensive works at all.
And the Cretan Palace-Cities possessed some of the most "free hand" art the world has seen. Really joyous, inspiring stuff. A relaxed, intelligent, innovative culture. Vibrant as vibrant can be.
Heads on right.
Wanted to be there.
I think of cultures that hit the near-top of conduct, and they are the highest in my memory.
Angkor et all, Khmer, wasn't bad; Asoka (India), etc, but still, the Minoans...... mama mia!
End of teeny lecture.
Well, you know, I bet you have seen that, too, or maybe sumthin diffrent.
It's the Happy Campers Award. |
