PMSW: You are correct. Even if you are within an 1/8 to 3/8 you can sometimes be exercised to help balance the books on the close out of options. I think the buzz word is being "assigned". The problem is you don't usually know until the following Monday. You are correct that the best policy is to buy the call back if you don't want your position called away. JFD P.S. I learned this the hard way.
